Learning Mentor – Secondary

Long Term Futures is recruiting a motivated and supportive Learning Mentor for a full-time role within a welcoming secondary school in Haringey. This is an excellent opportunity for someone passionate about helping young people overcome barriers to learning, improve their confidence, and achieve their full academic and personal potential.

The successful candidate will work closely with teaching staff, the pastoral team, SENCO, and senior leaders to provide targeted support for students across KS3 and KS4. The role focuses on improving attendance, engagement, behaviour for learning, and emotional wellbeing through tailored one-to-one and small-group interventions.

Responsibilities

• Providing one-to-one and small-group mentoring to students who require additional academic, behavioural, or emotional support.
• Building positive and trusting relationships to improve confidence, motivation, and engagement with learning.
• Supporting students to overcome barriers to education, including low attendance, behaviour concerns, and social or emotional challenges.
• Delivering targeted intervention sessions to improve organisation, study skills, resilience, and self-esteem.
• Working alongside teachers to support students within lessons and promote positive behaviour for learning.
• Monitoring student progress and maintaining accurate records of interventions and outcomes.
• Liaising with parents, carers, and external professionals where appropriate to ensure consistent support.
• Supporting students during unstructured times, including break and lunch, where required.
• Encouraging positive relationships, independence, and personal responsibility.
• Helping to create a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment throughout the school.

Essential Candidate Requirements

• Previous experience working as a Learning Mentor, Behaviour Mentor, Teaching Assistant, Pastoral Support Worker, Youth Worker, or in a similar role.
• Experience supporting secondary-aged students is highly desirable.
• Strong understanding of strategies to improve engagement, attendance, and behaviour for learning.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build positive relationships.
• A calm, patient, and resilient approach when working with young people.
• A genuine passion for supporting students’ educational and personal development.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a wider pastoral and inclusion team.
• Must hold a valid Enhanced DBS check on the Update Service.
