Long Term Futures is currently seeking a dedicated and resilient SEN Teaching Assistant to join a supportive secondary school in the London Borough of Barking & Dagenham. This is an excellent opportunity for a passionate education professional who is committed to supporting young people with Special Educational Needs and helping them achieve both academic and personal success.

Working closely with teachers, the SENCO, and pastoral teams, you will provide tailored support to students across Key Stages 3 and 4. The successful candidate will play a key role in helping pupils overcome barriers to learning, develop confidence, and engage positively with their education.
 

Key Duties

• Providing 1:1 and small group support for students with Special Educational Needs.
• Supporting pupils with ASD, ADHD, SEMH needs, Speech and Language difficulties, and other additional learning needs.
• Assisting students in accessing the curriculum across a range of subject areas.
• Delivering targeted interventions focused on academic progress, social skills, and emotional wellbeing.
• Implementing strategies outlined in EHCPs and individual support plans.
• Promoting positive behaviour and supporting students with emotional regulation.
• Supporting pupils during lessons, transitions, breaktimes, and other key parts of the school day.
• Monitoring student progress and providing feedback to teaching staff and the SENCO.
• Building positive relationships with students, families, and external professionals.
• Working collaboratively with teachers, pastoral teams, and support staff to improve student outcomes.
• Encouraging independence, resilience, and confidence in young people.
• Contributing to a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment.

Candidate Requirements

• Previous experience working as an SEN Teaching Assistant, Teaching Assistant, Learning Support Assistant, Behaviour Mentor, Youth Worker, or similar role.
• Experience supporting young people with Special Educational Needs within a school or alternative provision setting.
• A strong understanding of SEND and inclusive educational practices.
• Experience supporting students with ASD, ADHD, SEMH needs, or behavioural challenges is highly desirable.
• Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
• The ability to engage and motivate secondary-aged students.
• A calm, patient, and resilient approach to supporting young people.
• Strong behaviour management and de-escalation skills.
• A proactive and adaptable approach to supporting teaching and learning.
• A genuine passion for helping young people overcome barriers to education and reach their full potential.
• An Enhanced DBS registered (Child Workforce) on the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one.
