SEN Teaching Assistant

  • Location: Coventry, CV1
  • Weekly Rate: £500 – £525
  • Start Date: September 2026
  • Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:30am – 3:30pm (Term Time Only)
  • Contract: Long Term to Permanent

Long Term Futures are seeking a nurturing and dedicated SEN Teaching Assistant to join one of our partner primary schools in central Coventry.

This rewarding role involves providing 1:1 support for a Reception-aged pupil with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) within the school’s specialist resource hub. The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting the child’s communication, social development, emotional regulation, and engagement in learning through structured, autism-friendly approaches.

You will work closely with an experienced SEN Teacher, SENCO, and wider SEND team within a highly supportive and well-resourced environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Providing dedicated 1:1 support for a Reception pupil with ASD
  • Supporting communication, interaction, and early learning development
  • Using Makaton and other alternative communication methods to support understanding and engagement
  • Implementing strategies outlined within the pupil’s EHCP
  • Using visual supports, structured routines, and sensory regulation strategies
  • Supporting engagement during EYFS learning activities and play-based learning
  • Encouraging independence, confidence, and positive social interactions
  • Working collaboratively with teaching staff, therapists, and parents where required
  • Monitoring progress and contributing to reviews and target setting

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

  • Level 2 or Level 3 Supporting Teaching and Learning qualification (or equivalent)
  • Experience supporting children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
  • Understanding of Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN)
  • Experience using Makaton to support communication and language development
  • Knowledge of autism-specific strategies and interventions
  • Experience using visual timetables, Now & Next boards, social stories, or PECS
  • Understanding of sensory processing needs and sensory regulation strategies
  • Knowledge of EHCPs and supporting pupils to achieve individual targets
  • Familiarity with the EYFS Framework and early childhood development
  • A patient, nurturing, and proactive approach to supporting learning

Desirable Training & Experience:

  • Autism Awareness Training
  • Makaton Training (Level 1 or above desirable)
  • Attention Autism
  • TEACCH Approaches
  • PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System)
  • Intensive Interaction
  • Sensory Processing or Sensory Circuits Training
  • Understanding of Neurodiversity and Inclusive Practice
