One-to-One Teaching Assistant Jobs
Make a difference as a one-to-one teaching assistant
A one-to-one teaching assistant gives an individual pupil focused support throughout the school day. It is a rewarding education role for someone who is patient, observant and motivated by helping children overcome barriers to learning.
At Long Term Futures, we connect caring, capable candidates with one-to-one teaching assistant opportunities in schools across London and the Midlands. Whether you already have classroom experience or want to build a career in education, our team can help you find a role that suits your skills, availability and ambitions.
What does a one-to-one teaching assistant do?
The exact responsibilities depend on the pupil, school and support plan. In most settings, a one-to-one teaching assistant works closely with the class teacher and wider pastoral or SEND team to help one pupil participate, learn and feel secure.
- Adapt classroom activities so the pupil can access the lesson.
- Explain tasks in clear, manageable steps and reinforce teacher instructions.
- Support communication, confidence, emotional regulation and positive behaviour.
- Encourage independence rather than completing work for the pupil.
- Notice progress or changes and share useful observations with school staff.
- Help the pupil take part in routines, transitions, breaktimes and wider school life.
Some roles support pupils with special educational needs or disabilities, while others focus on social, emotional or behavioural needs. A good placement begins with understanding the individual child and following the school’s agreed approach.
What makes a strong one-to-one teaching assistant?
Schools value reliability, empathy and calm communication. You need to build trust without creating dependency, remain consistent when a day is challenging and recognise that progress may happen in small steps.
- Patience and a positive, encouraging manner
- Clear communication and active listening
- The ability to follow plans while responding flexibly
- Good boundaries, discretion and professional judgement
- Confidence working with teachers, families and support professionals
- A genuine commitment to safeguarding and pupil wellbeing
Do I need experience?
Requirements vary between schools and vacancies. Classroom or SEND experience can be valuable, but transferable experience may also be relevant. This could include youth work, tutoring, care, coaching, mentoring or supporting children in a voluntary setting. Qualifications in teaching assistance, childcare or education may strengthen an application, although the right personal qualities remain essential.
Long Term Futures will explain the requirements for each vacancy and the checks needed before a placement. Be open about your experience so we can identify roles in which you can succeed and pupils can receive appropriate support.
